Benefits of Zinc Product InformationLow dietary zinc can cause a multitude of health problems. Studies show that low zinc intake increased the chance of heart disease, diabetes, growth deficiency, retarded healing and a weakened immune system. (Journal of American College of Nutrition 1998)
In the study by the College, 3500 people were surveyed. It was concluded that those consuming less than seven milligrams a day were more likely to suffer from heart disease, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and glucose intolerance. These people had a higher incident of high blood pressure, high triglycerides and a lower amount of HDL, which is the good cholesterol that our bodies need to maintain optimum health.
Active individuals and athletes need more zinc than others because zinc is flushed from the body when we sweat. Alcoholics, vegetarians, growing children and those with chronic disease should take a zinc supplement daily. Infants who are still breastfeeding between seven and twelve months old, need a diet high in zinc to keep their bodies healthy.
Foods that are high in zinc include red meat, poultry, fortified cereals, seafood, dry beans, whole grains and nuts.
Daily zinc supplement dosage is recommended as follows:
- Infants from birth to 6 months – 4 mg
- 7 to 12 months – 5 mg
- 1 to 3 years – 7 mg
- 4 to 8 years – 12 mg
- 9 to 13 years – 23 mg
- 14 to 18 years – 34 mg
- 19 years + - 40 mg
Zinc toxicity can occur in both acute and chronic forms. Never exceed the daily recommended dose. If in doubt, be sure to seek advice from your family physician.
