Benefits of Chromium Product InformationChromium is an essential nutrient usually found in natural foods. However, with today’s highly processed foods, it is possible to become chromium deficient. It is a nutrient important in processing proteins, fats, as well as carbohydrates. It may also play a part in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is also helps maintain proper blood sugar levels.
For a long time, the unregulated advertising endorsed chromium as a supplement that could promote weight loss. These claims are still controversial. However, studies have shown chromium can help obese people lose weight by promoting the increase of muscle mass and the reduction of fat.
In one relatively controversial study, chromium was found to boost DHEA levels, which in turn increases testosterone, which—you guessed it—builds muscle. In another study involving swimmers, the swimmers taking chromium supplements increased muscle mass by 3.3% and decreased fat by 6.4%on average as opposed to the swimmers who were not taking chromium supplements. Female swimmers saw the largest decrease in fat—over 8%. The swimmers reported improved performance and less swimming-related soreness.
Chromium is very popular with athletes, and some researchers believe that the cumulative, long-term supplementation with chromium can have observable benefits. Chromium supplements for athletic purposes usually contain other ingredients as well. Ma Huang, an herb that contains the dangerous ephedrine, quickens metabolism and heart rate. It has widely been used in chromium supplements, unfortunately. It’s important to look for chromium that does not contain ephedrine—not only is it dangerous, but it is banned from use for athletic competitions.
Chromium can affect levels of other chemicals and nutrients in the body. People with diabetes should be aware that their insulin dosage may need to be adjusted if they choose to take chromium supplements. Chromium can also reduce the amount of zinc absorbed through diet; chromium supplements should probably be taken in conjunction with zinc supplements so as not to deplete this important nutrient.
