Benefits of Ginger

Benefits of Ginger Product Information

A recent study by the University of Michigan Health System is beginning to prove what many mother's have known all along. A glass of ginger ale or ginger tea does relieve nausea and stomach aches.

According to Suzanna Zick, N.D., MPH, research investigator in the study, "ginger does appear to have several medicinal qualities." She also states that ginger can be used to warm the body and relieve some types of arthritis. This new study was funded to discover if ginger could be used in the treating of nausea caused by chemotherapy. The study is still ongoing and no conclusions have been reached.

The main component ingredient of ginger is gingerol, which is a strong antioxidant. By its nature, it works to reduce oxidants in the stomach by free. Another benefit is that it blocks serotonin receptors not allowing serotonin to enter causing more nausea.

The warming side effect of ginger is caused by the dilation of blood vessels, which can be helpful in some forms of arthritis.

Ginger has long been used in Chinese Medicine for nausea symptoms of motion sickness and pregnancy. From Ancient Greece, beginning with Pythagoras and down through the ages, ginger has been known for its healing properties. Several studies have been conducted to discover the benefit of ginger in motion sickness, concluding that a glass of ginger tea before travel does indeed reduce the symptoms.

Other suggested benefits include relief of migraines and the lowering of cholesterol. Science is only beginning to research this wonderful rhizome and many more uses for 'ginger root' may become viable in medicine in the future.

Ginger is available fresh or in many other forms such as dried, capsules, teas, tinctures and the old stand by -- ginger ale. Consumers should make sure the product they are buying does indeed contain real ginger and not a synthetic product.

Other recommendations for an upset stomach include avoiding fatty foods, sweets, spicy or hot foods and strong aromatic foods. Foods to eat when feeling nauseous include small amounts of oatmeal, crackers, clear liquids (ginger ale), crackers and bland vegetables. Eating a small amount of gingersnap cookies, provided they are made with real ginger, can also help relieve an upset stomach.

In Medieval Europe, ginger was taken as a tonic to protect ones self from catching the plague. While this remedy has yet to be proven, what is known is that ginger can be taken safely and will indeed cure the common stomachache.
